Students are required to take one course in teaching methodology. The specific course is selected by the student with approval of the doctoral committee. The course will cover topics such as methods of presentation, testing procedures, evaluation, lesson planning, and setting course goals and objectives. The specific course selected will vary depending on the student's background, career objectives, and course availability.
After completion of the teaching methodology course requirement, which is part of the candidacy requirement, students are required to teach one undergraduate course under the mentorship of a full-time faculty member. The teaching requirement can be completed anytime before the oral defense of the dissertation. Students are responsible for the design, presentation, and evaluation of an undergraduate engineering course. Students not on associateships will be compensated for these internships.
