Interdisciplinary Humanities Groups
Call for Proposals
As a gathering place for intellectual dialogue and exchange and with the goal of bringing together graduate students and faculty from across programs and disciplines, the Western Michigan University Center for the Humanities invites proposals for Interdisciplinary Humanities Groups.
A research group is a way to approach challenging and important topics in the humanities and develop theoretical interest and research in new areas with the support of a knowledgeable, diverse group of colleagues. It also provides an opportunity to move across disciplinary boundaries in academic life and to meet scholars with similar interests around campus.
The University Center for the Humanities will support a semester of work by interdisciplinary groups, providing space for meetings, help with organization and advertising, and a small hosting fund (e.g., for refreshments).
Groups will:

  1. be led by two WMU faculty members and/or graduate students from different fields, who will be responsible for organizing and chairing the meetings, discussing texts, and leading discussions during the semester of the award.
  2. meet at the University Center for the Humanities at least four times during the semester.
  3. provide a brief report to the Humanities Center Coordinator at the end of the semester.
  4. submit names and affiliations of group leaders and members

Successful group proposals must include:

  1. a title for the group, and a brief statement of purpose (250 words).
  2. the names and affiliations of group leaders and members.
  3. a proposed budget for the year (the group may seek up to $500 per semester).

Proposals will be reviewed by the advisory board of the University Center for the Humanities.

Deadline for proposals for the academic year 2014/2015: April 18, 2014 (awards announced on May 5, 2014)
