PPM Section 3 - Employment practices: employment eligibility verification

I-9 form

  1. The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 requires employers to verify that all new employees, including student employees, are legally eligible to work in the United States. A properly completed I-9 form is used to provide this verification.

  2. The Immigration Reform and Control Act also prohibits discrimination against any individual (other than an unauthorized alien) in recruiting, hiring or discharging because of national origin or citizenship status.

Procedure — I-9 forms

  1. The hiring department is responsible for completion and maintenance of the new hire's Employment Eligibility Verification (I-9 form). The I-9 form and instructions are found on the HR Web site.

  2. The completion date of the I-9 form is to be noted on the employee's Appointment Form.
