Hiring temporary employees via an agency

Temporary employees may be hired via a temporary employment agency on a short-term basis to help with work assignments. WMU partners with Specialized Staffing Solutions to provide qualified temporary employees to the University community.

Request temporary help from Specialized Staffing Solutions

To request temporary help, complete Specialized Staffing Solution's online Temporary Employee Order Form. Upon receipt of your information, Specialized Staffing Solutions will contact you within 24 hours. If you need immediate assistance, please place a phone call to Specialized Staffing Solutions after submitting the online form (see contact information below).

Departments are responsible for temporary employment costs. If required, departments should secure approval before submitting a temporary employee request to Specialized Staffing Solutions.

Advantages to using a temporary agency

  • Agency acts as employer, reducing liability associated with Workers' Compensation and unemployment insurance.
  • Agency responsible for background checks.
  • Agency handles end of appointments.

Types of temporary employees provided

Contact Specialized Staffing Solutions if you need temporary employees for the following types of positions:

  • Clerical (e.g. receptionist, clerk, finance clerk, office assistant, office associate)
  • Custodial
  • Dining
  • Landscaping

Specialized Staffing Solutions may also be able to assist with filling other types of temporary positions.

Candidate already identified?

If you have already identified a candidate that you would like to hire temporarily, you may do so via Specialized Staffing Solutions at a discounted rate. Please use the online Temporary Employee Order Form, select "Payrolling Service" under Job Type, and enter the candidate's name under Job Description. When exercising this "Payrolling Service" option, you receive the same temporary agency advantages outlined above.

Other options

If Specialized Staffing Solutions is unable to meet your temporary help needs, you may hire a WMU temporary employee directly through Electronic Workflow with the following provisions:

  • Temporary employment is an "at will" employment relationship and may be terminated for any reason at any time.
  • Hiring departments are responsible for recruitment and ending appointments.
  • Background checks are recommended, and the hiring department is responsible for the cost. To coordinate a background check, contact your Human Resources Representative.
  • Rate of pay must be at least minimum wage.
  • The University will be responsible for any legal liabilities, such as Workers' Compensation and unemployment insurance.
