Retirement and tax-deferred savings plans

Retirement plan

The University's retirement plan is administered by TIAA-CREF. This is a defined contribution plan, in that contributions to the plan are a defined percentage of the employee's base wages.

  • For participating employees hired on or after January 1, 2013, WMU contributes 9% of total gross earnings to the employee's retirement account. WMU’s contribution increases to 10% if the employee tax-defers at least 1% but less than 2%; to 11% if the employee tax-defers 2% or more. For participating employees hired before January 1, 2013, WMU contributes 11% of total gross earnings to the employee's retirement account.
  • This plan is also self-directed, in that the employee decides how the funds in the account are invested amongst several options. The income received at retirement is based on the value of the account.
  • Vesting and eligibility vary by employee group.
  • For more information, please visit WMU's TIAA-CREF Web site.

MPSERS

The University is not enrolling new employees in this plan. For more information, employees who were hired in the past and who actively participate in this program may visit the MPSERS Web page. A number of webinars and seminars are offered by the State of Michigan's Office of Retirement Services. Questions can be directed to MPSERS at 1-800-381-5111.

Tax-deferred savings plans (optional)

Employees may add to their retirement savings by contributing to the optional 403(b) tax-deferred savings plan through payroll deduction. These 403(b) contributions may be invested with TIAA-CREF or Fidelity.

After reaching their maximum 403(b) contributions, employees may contribute to an optional 457(b) tax-deferred savings plan through TIAA-CREF.

For more details, please review this year's Tax-Deferred Savings Enrollment Information.
