Internship Opportunity: The Heart Center for Excellence (HCE) Exercise Physiologist Internship program is a full-time (40hrs/week) 12 week program. It is offered to undergraduate students pursuing a degree in exercise science or a related field. The Heart Center is a large, multifaceted cardiology practice with nationally recognized physicians and facilities throughout Southwest Michigan. Our services include physician office visits, comprehensive diagnostic testing, and a pacemaker/defibrillator clinic. The primary goal of the HCE internship program is to provide a high-quality, hands on experience in clinical/diagnostic testing. This will be achieved through observation, participation, and eventual performance of diagnostic tests (with supervision). Diagnostic testing will include exercise and pharmacological nuclear perfusion imaging, stress and pharmacological echocardiography, and holter/event monitoring. All testing is conducted in accordance with ACSM guidelines. Interns should have a basic knowledge of these guidelines prior to the beginning of the program. In addition to diagnostic testing, interns will have exposure to the pacemaker and defibrillator clinic as well as Phase I and Phase II cardiac rehabilitation. Opportunities may be presented to observe cardiac catherizations, pacemaker/defibrillator implantation, transesophageal echocardiograms and cardioversions. A basic understanding of the business aspect of healthcare will be incorporated into the everyday activities of the program. Applicants should have a basic knowledge of EKG’s, blood pressures, and ACSM guidelines. All applicants need to have a current BLS certification. If interested, please contact Heidi Riker, internship coordinator, at 567-2411 or email at hriker@hotmail.com.
