The Honors Program

Our program consists of two designated “clusters” (i.e., two courses paired together with the same students in each) as listed in the LHC catalogue, or one designated cluster, plus enough additional LHC single classes to reach a total of six classes. You will also take two single courses at the junior/senior level, and complete a capstone Thesis Project. Our lower level classes, like our upper level courses, foster discussion and dialogue between professors and fellow students in a small, seminar format. Here, learning is not simply rote memorization, it is an opportunity to grow through the dynamic interchange of viewpoints and ideas.

As a member of the Lee Honors College, you’ll choose a major from one of the University’s six undergraduate colleges and elect to enrich your undergraduate education through the honors program during your years of study at WMU. You begin this program with clusters--linked courses that deepen your knowledge of a variety of topics that are meaningful, often unusual, and always intellectually challenging. These courses normally fulfill general education and curricula requirements, in addition to helping to meet your honors requirements. Our clusters have the additional benefit of introducing students into a community of other honors students in small, integrative courses, taught by professors dedicated to undergraduate teaching.

The cluster courses center on interrelated themes such as: Medical Career Foundations; Business Environment; The World and Its People; the Horrors of War; and Science and Technology.

At the junior and senior level you will take a single course or seminar each year from an extensive range of offerings. These are highly interactive classes where students participate energetically in the learning process. Our upper level classes are wide-ranging and investigate such diverse, compelling subjects as The Warrior, Rat Lab, World Cinema, History of Childhood, The Holocaust, and Biomedical Ethics

The culmination of your honors experience is the Honors Thesis. This is a senior endeavor that brings to fruition your years of academic development to produce a work appropriate to your field of study. You will be guided through this project by a mentor and a thesis committee of professional people from your field. The Dean, Dr. Keith Hearit, and Associate Dean, Dr. Nick Andreadis, will support you with this process. In addition to being a reflection of your talents and knowledge, the Thesis is a stepping stone to future employment or graduate and professional schools.
