Academically Talented Youth Program (ATYP)

How ATYP meets (and exceeds) the new Michigan Merit High School Graduation Requirements for language arts and mathematics

ATYP has spent much time this past year evaluating and adjusting course content to meet and exceed the standards that the state has given for math and language arts in the new Michigan Merit High School Graduation Requirements.

In our math program, we teach Algebra I and Algebra II the first year, using the Prentice-Hall High School Math Series, which has content designed to ensure that we meet the High School Content Expectations (HSCE) for Michigan. In our second year of mathematics, we teach Geometry and Precalculus. We continue to use the Prentice-Hall series for Geometry. For PreCalculus, we use the text, Precalculus: 3rd Edition by Lial/Hornsby/Schneider. The alignment records below demonstrate how ATYP utilizes each book to meet the High School Content Expectations listed.

In our English 9/10 and 11/12 classes, our students read several types of literature, complete interactive projects, and compile a large portfolio of written work each year. Since the Language Arts HSCE are more nebulous, we have included a description of how we meet and exceed the expectations overall in the two courses.

If you have any questions regarding how our courses fit into the Michigan Merit Curriculum, please do not hesitate to contact our office at (269) 387-3230 or Kelly.schultz@wmich.edu.
