Congratulations to LHC junior Dan Lomasney!

Dan was honored as the recipient of the 2009 STAR Award in the Young Adult Volunteer category for his efforts as a mentor through Big Brothers Big Sisters in Kalamazoo. The LHC congratulates former ATYP student Isabella Wu!

Isabella, who also is a dual enrolled student at WMU, was honored as the recipient of the 2009 STAR Award in the Youth Volunteer category for her volunteer efforts with several agencies, completing 175 total hours of volunteering during the past year! The WMU Student Competition for the Best Award/Art on Civilization – 2009(organized by the Western Michigan University and the International Society for the Comparative Study of Civilizations) is seeking submissions from WMU students. Congratulations to LHC senior Katy LaFleur!

Kathleen (Katy) LaFleur, senior honors student majoring in Music Performance: Instrumental, is the only undergraduate winner of the 2009 Concerto Competition in the School of Music at WMU. One of 15 competitors, Katy performed the Concertino da Camera for Alto Saxophone and Chamber Orchestra by Jacques Ibert, accompanied by Carl Witt, piano, at the competition finals on February 15 in the Dalton Center Recital Hall. Katy will be featured at the 50th Annual Concerto Concert along with the two graduate student winners on Sunday, April 19 at 3 p.m. in Miller Auditorium. The concert is free and will include the University Symphony Orchestra. Katy was the recipient of the 2008 Carl and Winifred Lee Research Travel Scholarship, and used this to complete her thesis, The Saxophonist of New York City, with guidance from Trent Kynaston in the School of Music. Katy is from Grandville, MI.

Congratulations to LHC senior Jaime LeBlanc-Hadley!

Jaime has been awarded a Boren Scholarship through the National Security Exchange Program to attend Beijing Language and Culture University for the 2008-09 academic year. While she is there, she also will spend part of her time working on her WMU Lee Honors College thesis project, which focuses on Chinese economic policy, primarily in Tibet. Scholars and Scholarship Winners

Tanya Pulver won the International Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship to study in South America in 2001 and graduated from Medical School at MSU in 2006.

Tristan Brown received a Udall Scholarship for 2004-05, was chosen as a USA Today All-American Scholar, was a finalist for the George Mitchell Scholarship, and won the Gates-Cambridge Scholarship in 2006.

Aimee Jachym was a Fulbright Scholar in Korea in 2004-05, and has now been hired by the Fulbright Commission to help train future scholars.

Sonya Datta-Sandhu was awarded an International Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship to study in South America in 2004.

David Hoogerheide was selected as a Goldwater Scholar for 2003, and was a regional finalist for the Rhodes Scholarship.

Ben Appleby was a Udall Scholar in 2002.

Jackie Styrna won the Udall in 2001.

Laura Jeltema was a Fulbright Scholar in Austria in 2001. She now practices environmental law in Detroit.

Heather Gott became WMU's first Udall Scholar in April 2000.

Aaron Bosenecker was a Fulbright Scholar in Austria in 2000.

Jonathan Reid won the Humanities Division of the NCHC Portz Essay Contest in 2000, graduated in 2002, and received a graduate degree in Philosophy from the University of Sussex, England, in 2003.

James Griffioen, in 2000, was a finalist in competition for both the Rhodes and British Marshall Scholarships.

Sara Woodward became WMU's first Truman Scholar in March 1999. She graduated from the University of Michigan Law School in 2003.

Sarah Riley was a finalist for the Truman Scholarship in 1998.

Marc Humphrey, a Goldwater scholar in 1996, was a USA Today All-American scholar in 1997, and graduated from Harvard University with a Ph.D. in 2003.

Heather Rogers was awarded the Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship to Spain in 1996.
