1998-June, 2000
South Haven Harborwalk
For over a decade, the City of South and MMM officials planned to erect a series of waterfront markers that would interpret South Haven's maritime history to residents and the visiting public. Building on the momentum of the South Haven lighthouse marker dedicated on June 20, 1998 (see above) the GLCMS turned its attention to seeing this project through. Public History graduate student, Paula Lange, played a lead role in this undertaking. Subjects and themes for 11 additional markers were selected through consultation with MMM staff and local residents. Research, label writing, photo selection and design work was complete in August 1999 and materials were sent to ProtoProductions in Chicago for fabrication. The City of South Haven worked with GLCMS and other MMM staff to plan site locations, installation requirements, and a dedication program held on June 18, 2000. Funding for the design and fabrication of the markers was solicited by Lange from private and corporate sponsors and several public service organizations. |
