Public History Degree Programs at WMU

Undergraduate

Students seeking a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major or minor in Public History complete a series of core courses such as Introduction to Public History, Museum Studies, Archival Management, Historic Preservation, and Local History Research Techniques. They also complete an internship and a series of other courses in history and other humanities and social sciences.

Graduate

Students seeking a Master of Arts or Ph.D. with a concentration in Public History complete courses, an internship, and comprehensive exams. Ph.D. Students must complete a dissertation.

Non-credit courses, workshops, and programs on specialized topics or methodologies are also offered as part of the Public History program. A growing network of WMU Public History graduates are employed in museums, historic sites, and other cultural institutions in the Great Lakes region and beyond.

Graduate Studies Application deadline: January 15

  • Application deadline for admission without financial aid to MA programs: July 1 for Fall Term; November 1 for Spring Term and April I for Summer sessions I and II
  • Application deadline for admission for Ph.D. program: January 15
