Becker Awarded Dissertation Fellowship

Brian Becker (Medieval History) has been awarded a Graduate College Dissertation Fellowship. Brian's dissertation, ÒCircumstantial Symbiosis: Life and Local Administration on Fifteenth Century Genoese Chios,Ó combines an institutional history of the Genoese Aegean Sea island colony of Chios with an examination of the internal dynamics of Chian society under Genoese rule and what role the ruling Genoese Mahona, or association of ship owners involved in the conquest, played in its construction. Research for the dissertation was carried out with the assistance of a Fulbright Fellowship for the 2005-06 academic year, during which time he conducted research at both the Genoese State Archives and the Genoese Civic Library (Biblioteca Civica Berio).

The fellowship will provide release time from teaching responsibilities and allow Brian to devote himself exclusively to writing up the results of his research.
