Teaching American History Grant

The U.S. Department of Education recently awarded the Kalamazoo Regional Education Service Agency (KRESA) with a $986,000 Teaching American History grant. KRESA was one of four school districts in Michigan to receive a Teaching American History grant in 2003. Wilson Warren, Nora Faires, Fred Dobney, and Patricia Rogers from Western Michigan University's Department of History along with educators from the Kalamazoo Valley Museum and the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum will provide instruction to high school United States history teachers from 52 school districts in southwestern Michigan over the next three summers. The Summer Institutes will provide teachers with focused content perspectives and pedagogical instruction in authentic historical methods and materials.

Conference Opportunities

2003 Great Lakes History Conference

The Twenty-Eight Annual Great Lakes History Conference, sponsored by the History Department of Grand Valley State University, will be held Friday and Saturday, Nov.7-8, 2003, at GVSU’s Eberhard Center in downtown Grand Rapids. This year’s theme is "From Slavery to Freedom in the Atlantic World." The conference features thirty-six panels on historical topics, with over ninety presenters.

Professor Ira Berlin of the University of Maryland will deliver the keynote address, "American Slavery in History and Memory," on Saturday afternoon.

In addition, the conference organizers are sponsoring a public lecture by noted African-American novelist Charles Johnson on African-American Memory-Making and the Attempt to Tell History through Fiction. The public lecture will take place on the evening of Friday, November 7, 2003, at the Loosemore Auditorium of GVSU’s DeVos Campus in downtown Grand Rapids.
