The
Department of History of Western Michigan University and The Michigan
Supreme Court Historical Society announce the Michigan Supreme
Court Historical Society Fellowship for graduate study at the M.A.
or the Ph.D. level. The first recipient will begin graduate work
at Western Michigan University in the Fall 2003. The fellowship
is designed to foster academic research on the history of the Supreme
Court of Michigan and dissemination of such research. The recipient
will enhance his or her own scholarly credentials while contributing
to this objective.
AWARD,
RENEWABLE UP TO 3 YEARS:
- Salary
and stipend of up to $19,000 annually for Ph.D. students plus
tuition assistance.
- Salary
and stipend of up to $15,000 for M.A. students plus tuition assistance.
- Award
includes some travel and research funds.
DUTIES
OF FELLOWSHIP RECIPIENT:
- Full-time
graduate enrollment.
- 20-hours
per week of research into any phase of the history of the Michigan
Supreme Court.
- Work
under supervision of an appropriate faculty member.
- Periodic
communication with staff of the Michigan Supreme Court Historical
Society.
- By
end of academic year, production of a scholarly product of high
professional caliber. Suitable products might take a variety
of forms, such as an article to be submitted to a scholarly journal,
a catalog for a museum exhibit, or a curriculum guide for K-12
Schools.

MAY BE RELATED TO THESIS OR DISSERTATION TOPIC. POSSIBLE THEMES:
- civil
rights
- gender
issues
- ethnicity
- labor
relations
- environmental
issues
- migration,
immigration
- property
rights
- legal,
judicial history
APPLICATION
PROCESS:
- Candidates
should apply for admission to the Graduate Program in History
at Western Michigan University and indicate that they are applying
for the Michigan Supreme Court Historical Society Fellowship.
- Application
must include at least two letters of recommendation addressing
applicants qualifications for fellowship.
- Application
must include a letter from applicant discussing his or her envisioned
specialization in graduate school and possible relations to themes
of the Fellowship.
- Applicants
must complete the application process as required by the WMU

- Preference
will be given to Ph.D. candidates. Applicants not granted this
award will be considered for other assistantships in the graduate
program in History at Western Michigan University.
