Professional
Experience
I
have been Director of the Kalamazoo Valley Museum and an Adjunct
Professor of History at WMU since 1985. Kalamazoo Valley Museum
is an accredited participatory museum of history, science and
technology located downtown. At WMU, I have taught courses
and seminars in museum studies, US history, and the history
of American thought. I have also served on masters and doctoral
committees and have supervised tutorial readings courses at
both undergraduate and graduate levels. I would be pleased
to discuss museum internships and museum careers by appointment
at (269) 373-7987/ 7988.
Teaching
In
Spring 2004 I will be teaching History 439: Topics in American
History, 6:30 9:00 PM on Mondays. The course will focus
on US Intellectual History, 1900-2000. I have also taught at
Texas Christian University and the University of Maryland.
Before coming to Kalamazoo, I was the Curator of History at
the Museum of Science and History in Fort Worth and Director
of Chippewa Valley Museum in Wisconsin.
Research
My
professional publications have evolved out my career as a history
museum curator and director. I am particularly interested in
the development of American museums and the ideas that have
animated them. I wrote History by Design: A Primer on Interpreting
and Exhibiting Community History (Texas Association of Museums:
1984) and "The Long March to the New Museum," a chapter
in the anthology Institutional Trauma: Major Change in Museums
and its Effect on Staff (American Association of Museums: 1995).
I also write articles and reviews for Museum News, History
News, Association of Science-Technology Newsletter, and The
Informal Science Review.
Community
Service
I
have offered workshops in museum studies for the American Association
for State and Local History and other museum professional organizations.
I review grant projects for the Institute of Library and Museum
Services, the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs
and the Michigan Humanities Council. I also chair accreditation
and assessment teams for the American Association of Museums.
