Dr. Andrew Devenney

Teaching

Dr. Devenney teaches undergraduate survey courses in world history and western civilization and a course in European history since 1945. In the past, he has also taught courses on English/British, German, and US history, and historical methods.

Research

Dr. Devenney's research centers on studying the political, economic, and social processes of European integration in the British Isles through transnational and comparative perspectives. His current work explores domestic responses to European integration in the British Isles in the 1960s and 1970s. In a book manuscript entitled "European Integration and the British Isles: Becoming European in England, Scotland, and Ireland, 1960-1975," he examines the political, intellectual, and rhetorical strategies domestic political actors in Scotland, Ireland, and England developed to accommodate European issues in domestic politics, as well as the impact questions over devolution, partition, and neutrality had upon the European integration debate. Additionally, Dr. Devenney is currently in the preliminary stages of a new project on the spatial history of the European Union (EU), which is investigating how European political and economic integration has altered the use, function, organization, and meaning of physical and social spaces in Europe since 1945.
