Speech-Language Therapy
Who We Are
The Charles Van Riper Language, Speech, and Hearing Clinic was
established in 1936
as one of the nation’s fi rst university speech clinics.
It is operated by the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology at
Western Michigan University as an
integral part of the academic program.
Speech and language services are
provided by student clinicians under
the direct supervision of faculty
members who hold the Certifi cate
of Clinical Competence from the
American Speech-Language-Hearing
Association. Some services are
provided directly by faculty.
Who Can Benefit?
Children and adults with speech, language, and cognitive-communication
difficulties that interfere with their ability to:
- communicate needs and ideas effectively
- participate fully in home, school, work, and community
social interactions
- acquire literacy skills
What Problems Are Addressed?
- Child and adult articulation and language disorders
- Stuttering and fluency disorders
- Voice disorders
- Alternative and augmentative communication needs
- Aural rehabilitation
- English as a Second Language
What We Can Do
- Evaluate and diagnose communication problems
- Conduct individual and group speech and language therapy
- Consult with family members as well as educational and vocational services
- Make referrals to community resources
SPECIAL SERVICES
- Preschool Language Intervention Program for children between three
and five years of age who have delays in communication development
- Enabling Technology Services for individuals requiring augmentative
and alternative communication devices and strategies
- Aphasia Program for adults who have aphasia or other cognitivecommunication
disorders
- Voice Laboratory for comprehensive evaluation and treatment,
including laryngeal imaging
