Proficiency Exams

Upon admission, new first-year Full-time and first-year Extended-study students with a B.S.W. degree are informed of the time and place of proficiency exams. All exams are given prior to the beginning of fall semester classes. Proficiency exams are offered for SWRK 6100: Foundations of Social Welfare Policy, SWRK 6300: Social Change and Community Analysis, SWRK 6310: Human Behavior and the Social Environment, SWRK 6330: Advanced Seminar in Culture, Ethnicity, and Institutional Inequality in Social Work Practice, and SWRK 6400: Research and Evaluation Methods in Social Work. They are optional and there is no penalty for failure to pass. The objective is simply to ensure that B.S.W. graduates are not required to repeat course material from their prior curriculum if they have retained core course knowledge from their undergraduate program. The cost for taking each exam is $30.00. Students who receive a passing score can pay an additional $50.00 fee to receive credit for the course on their transcript. Contact the Director of Admissions and Student Services in the School of Social Work for more information.
