The Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology (SPPA) has a rich history beginning with its founding in 1936 by Dr. Charles Van Riper, one of the most published authors and researchers in the field prior to his retirement in 1966. The program was one of the first six in the nation to become accredited, and recently, the Master’s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology and Doctorate in Audiology received accreditation from the Council on Accreditation in Audiology and Speech Language Pathology for another eight years!
All SPPA programs are competitive and attract high caliber students, as the professions of speech-language pathology and audiology are among the top 25 best career choices. In the Charles Van Riper Language, Speech and Hearing Clinics and in southwestern Michigan, students have a variety of clinical opportunities including practicum in voice, aphasia communication enhancement, preschool language intervention, childhood trauma assessment, better hearing workshops, and infant hearing screening.
Students also have the opportunity to work with our very productive, award-winning faculty on their research grants and projects. Dr. Van Riper’s legacy of excellence and compassion is still evident in the quality curriculum, the high-caliber instruction, and the caring encouragement SPPA faculty members provide students.
Please explore our website to learn more about our programs, and feel free to contact us with your questions through our e-mail addresses. We are always willing and eager to share our passion for the professions and the legacy of our department.
Sincerely,

Ann A. Tyler, Ph.D., Professor and Chair
