Attention SPADA students: The SPADA curriculum has changed for undergraduate and graduate students effective Fall 2009. If you are a current SPADA student, you have the option to stay with the old curriculum or use the substitution list to move to the new curriculum. Contact your SPADA advisor to determine which option is best for you.

Welcome to Specialty Program in Alcohol and Drug Abuse, the first of its kind in Michigan and the first university-based training clinic in Michigan to address the criminal justice population of substance abusers.

Photo of Dennis SimpsonThe Specialty Program in Alcohol and Drug Abuse (SPADA) has been preparing professionals in the substance abuse field since 1973. That experience goes to work for individuals who choose SPADA to pursue credentials in the field through undergraduate and graduate studies. SPADA programs are exceptional and accessible.

  • Our faculty members—seasoned researchers and practitioners—share their knowledge in ways that enhance the individual student’s learning experience.
  • The state of the art, evidence-based theories and techniques presented prepare students for state and national certifications.
  • Faculty/student research teams engage in basic and applied research and quickly transfer results to practice. In this way, SPADA students directly impact the quality of work in the profession.

SPADA’s graduate program is offered on the main WMU Campus and at WMU regional sites in Lansing, Battle Creek, Grand Rapids and Traverse City. Graduate courses—available week days and weekends—can accommodate a variety of schedules. SPADA’s undergraduate program is offered on the main WMU campus and worldwide, through WMU’s Online Education (OE). Undergraduate and graduate practica are available at ten SPADA training clinics throughout Michigan and at other national and international sites.

We welcome your inquiry and interest in SPADA. Please browse this site and contact us for further information.

Sincerely,

Dennis Simpson, Ed.D.
Professor and Program Director
