Admissions - High School Students

Bachelor of Science in Nursing - Traditional
1. Complete the Western Michigan University (WMU) application form indicating nursing as the intended major.

2. Applications meeting minimum criteria for prenursing are forwarded to the WMU Bronson School of Nursing.

3. Final selection will be made by the Bronson School of Nursing based on the following criteria and students will be notified by mail. Admission is competitive.

Criteria:
1. A cumulative high school grade point average of 2.8 on a 4.0 scale.

2. Completion of the following requirements with a grade of "C" or higher:
· -Four years of English
· -Three years of mathematics, including intermediate algebra
·- Two years of sciences to include biology and chemistry

3. While not required for admission, the following academic work is strongly recommended and may lend some support in the admission process:
· -Four years of mathematics
· -Three years of biological/physical sciences
· -Two years of fine and performing arts
· -One year of computer literacy

Students will be admitted to the prenursing curriculum and will begin the program of studies in the fall semester of their freshman year. The sequence of prenursing courses can be individualized depending on the academic needs of the student. Admission to the prenursing curriculum will not guarantee admission to the professional nursing curriculum. Prenursing students will apply to the professional nursing curriculum during enrollment in NUR 1020.

Advancement - Prenursing:
To be considered for admission to the professional nursing curriculum, students must complete the following courses or their equivalents. (Students should consult with the nursing advisor to determine the equivalencies.)

Prelicensure students must complete the above courses with a grade of "C" or above, achieve a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.8 or above, and complete the formal application to be considered for admission to the professional nursing curriculum. Students will complete the application as part of the course requirements for NUR 1020.

Professional Curriculum Admission and Progression:
Selection criteria for admission will include individual grades, writing skills, cumulative grade point average, completion and professional appearance of the application form, a scored essay and availability of space in nursing courses. Admission is competitive.

The sequencing of the professional nursing curriculum is critical. Students must complete designated course requirements for each level in the nursing program before progressing to the next level. To remain in good standing within the professional nursing curriculum, students must achieve a grade of "C" or better in all nursing courses and maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or above. No nursing courses may be repeated without review and approval by the Student Affairs Committee. Further, students may only repeat such courses once following the initial enrollment.
