Accreditation - The rehabilitation teaching and orientation and mobility programs are approved by the Association for Education and Rehabilitation of the Visually Impaired (AER). The rehabilitation counseling/teaching program is accredited by the Council on Rehabilitation Education (CORE). The teacher of children with visual impairments program is approved by NCATE and the State of Michigan Department of Education.
Fieldwork - Students in all blindness and low vision studies programs are required to complete fieldwork that provides hands-on practice working with people who have visual impairments. Prospective practitioners work under the supervision of experienced professionals in schools, agencies, hospitals, or other institutions that serve people with visual impairments and other disabilities. Placement sites are located across the United States and students have some flexibility in selecting them. Specific requirements of the practical components vary across programs.
