Enabling International Characters

To enable international characters on a Windows machine, you must first reset your keyboard. This will allow certain key strokes to result in the appropriate character. On a Macintosh machine, you may simply use combined key strokes to accomplish the same. 

Reset your keyboard using Windows 7 or Vista

  1. Click Start.
  2. Enter intl.cpl in the Start Search box and press Enter.
  3. On the Keyboards and Language tab, click Change keyboards and then click Add.
  4. Expand the language you want, e.g. English (United States).
  5. Expand the keyboard list, select the United States-International check box and click OK.
  6. In the Default input language list, click Language name - United States-International (where Language name is the language you selected in step 4).
  7. Click the Language Bar tab and select Docked in the taskbar and then click OK two times.
  8. In the Regional and Language Options dialog box, click OK.
  9. Click the Languages bar and then click United States-International on the menu that appears. The United States-International keyboard layout is selected.

Reset your keyboard using Windows XP

  1. Click Start.
  2. Enter intl.cpl in the Run box and press Enter.
  3. On the Languages tab, click Details.
  4. Under Installed services, click Add.
  5. In the Input Language list, click the language that you want, e.g. English (United States).
  6. In the Keyboard layout/IME list, click United States-International and then click OK.
  7. In the Select one of the installed input languages to use when you start your computer list, click Language name - United States-International (where Language name is the language you selected in step 5) and then click OK.
  8. In the Regional and Language Options dialog box, click OK.
  9. Click the Language bar and then click United States-International on the menu that appears.
