Setting up E-mail using Windows Mail for Windows Vista

  1. Start Windows Mail
  2. Pull down the Tools menu and select Accounts



  3. Click the Add... button



  4. Click the E-mail Account button



  5. Type a Display name, for example your full name or "WMU E-mail", and click Next.




  6. Type your WMU E-mail address. (For example: joe.d.bronco@wmich.edu) Click Next.



  7. Set up your e-mail server:



    Incoming e-mail server type must be set to IMAP

    To determine your Incoming mail server reference the table below:

    - Students: imap.wmich.edu
    - Most Faculty and Staff: imap.wmich.edu
    - GroupWise users: imap.groupwise.wmich.edu


    For the Outgoing e-mail server enter smtp.wmich.edu

    Check the box that says Outgoing server requires authentication


    Click Next when finished.

  8. For E-mail username, enter your Bronco NetID (e.g. b0bronco). Type in your password if you would like Windows Mail to remember it for you. Click Next when you are finished.



  9. Click Finish on the Congratulations screen to return to the Internet Accounts window. There are still more settings to check so please continue with step 10.



  10. Click the name of your e-mail account, then click Properties



  11. Click the Advanced tab. Click the check box for This server requires a secure connection (SSL) for both Outgoing and Incoming mail. Change the SMTP server port number to 465 and the Incoming server port nubmer to 993. Click Ok when finished.




  12. On the Internet Accounts window, click the Close button



  13. If Windows Mail asks: Would you like to download folders from the mail server you added?, Click Yes.



  14. Windows Mail will take a moment to download your folders from the IMAP server. when that has finished, click the OK button on the Show/Hide IMAP Folders window.

  15. You have successfully configured Windows Mail to check your WMU e-mail account. To check for new messages, click on the Send/Receive on the Windows Mail Toolbar.
