Dr. Bailey’s work as a scholar has proceeded from a feminist perspective that explores gender, race, class, and sexual orientation. Her most recent project (forthcoming in Hypatia) raises such questions in relation to the (trans)gendered symbolism of the Buddhist icon, Kuan Yin. Other recent publications (Hypatia and Ethics and the Environment) have been on issues associated with animal ethics, articles that explicitly address the confluence of gender, race, and anthropocentrism. Another strand of inquiry is the recovery and reinterpretation of the 19th century African American theorist and activist, Anna Julia Cooper (Hypatia and forthcoming in Philosophia Africana).
Dr. Bailey earned her PhD in philosophy at the University of Missouri in 1994 (dissertation: “Feminism, Objectivity and Science”). She came to Western Michigan University in 2008 from Minnesota State University Mankato where she served as chair of the Philosophy Department and a member of the Women’s Studies Program Faculty.
