Gender & Women's Studies

Maria Markus completed her undergraduate coursework at Western Michigan University, graduating with a degree in Spanish, Philosophy and Women's Studies. She began teaching the introductory course in the Department of Gender and Women's Studies in 2007, while pursuing her Master of Social Work through the College of Health and Human Services at WMU. She hopes to one day work for a public services agency specializing in the treatment of battered and sexually abused women.

Before teaching for the Department of Gender and Women's Studies, Maria taught for the Spanish Department, teaching introductory Spanish classes. In addition to teaching at Western, Maria has interned and worked at several public service agencies in Kalamazoo, including Kalamazoo Loaves and Fishes and the Children's Trauma Assessment Center.

Whenever possible, she enjoys traveling around the world with her friends. When she isn't jetting off to other countries, she enjoys spending her summers at the ballpark (go Tigers!) and curling up with a good book through the long, cold, Michigan winters.
