The Hilltop Review:
A Journal of
Western Michigan University Graduate Research
CALL FOR PAPERS
General Guidelines
The Hilltop Review: A Journal of Western Michigan University Graduate Research accepts submissions from any current Western Michigan University (WMU) Graduate student. Papers are welcome from students in any of the University's graduate programs. Papers will be evaluated by an editorial board composed of WMU graduate students. Articles should be written in a style accessible to the educated lay person.
All submitted papers should meet the following guidelines:
- The first page should contain your name, department and graduate school, and contact information (phone and e-mail address). Your name should not appear on any other page.
- The second page should have the title of your article, and the article itself should begin immediately following the title.
- All pages should be numbered and double-spaced.
- The writing should be understandable by people outside your specific field; thus, you should avoid or explain technical terms.
- There is 25 page limit to submissions, most papers are between 10-15 pages long (double-spaced).
- Write in a style appropriate for your field, including conventions regarding figures and references.
- Papers should be in Microsoft Word or rich text format (RTF).
Please note: The Hilltop Review accepts all graduate student research, regardless of whether it has been published previously. However, students who wish to submit research for publication elsewhere (e.g., to another journal) should check the guidelines of that journal. In some cases publishing your work in The Hilltop Review may be against the policies of other publications.
Cover Art
The Hilltop Review is also soliciting contributions of digital photography and art for use on the 'cover' of the journal.
Cover Art Submissions
A good journal needs a good cover.
For each issue, our goal is to have cover art related to the research of one or more WMU graduate students. For example:
- A music historian might submit an image of a composer or score.
- A neuroscientist might submit a picture of neurons from a rat brain they are studying.
- Someone researching medieval literature might submit an image of an original book.
Submissions are not limited to photographs; artwork is also accepted.
Any WMU graduate student may submit images for consideration, regardless of whether or not they submit an article for publication in The Hilltop Review. However, those students submitting articles for The Hilltop Review are especially encouraged to submit cover art relating to their article.
By submitting artwork you agree that:
- There are no copyright restrictions on the image you submit and that it may be published on The Hilltop Review website in any form.
- The image may be manipulated or combined with other submissions in a collage.
Technical Requirements
- Electronic images are preferred. Standard formats that are accepted are TIFF, JPG, PNG, GIF, and PSD. For other formats please check first with the editor.
- If an electronic copy of your image or artwork is unavailable, a high-quality scannable print copy is also acceptable. Your original will be returned to you via intracampus mail.
- Please provide a brief description of what the image depicts and how it relates to your graduate work at WMU.
Instructions for 2007 Spring Issue
