The GFAC
Chairperson will be responsible for assisting the GSAC Chairperson and the
Budget Manager for Student Affairs in the formulation of the GSAC annual
budget. GFAC may recommend changes to the proposed budget prior to GSAC
approval. Allocation of GSAF to Registered Student Organizations (RSOs)
will be governed by the Graduate Financial Allocation Committee Allocation
Guidelines as approved by GSAC. GFAC, with the Budget Manager, will
be responsible for conducting occasional audits of the GSAC budget as well
as semester audits of RSOs funded by GSAF.
PUBLIC RELATIONS COMMITTEE (PRC)
Purpose: To maintain a diverse, active, and representational membership within GSAC. This
committee is responsible for promoting all programs and events established
by the Programming Committee that enrich the academic, cultural, social, and
professional experiences of the graduate student community. The PRC will
also effectively market and raise University awareness of GSAC.
Meetings: At least once a month or whenever called by the GSAC Chairperson
or the committee chairperson. Membership: The PRC is comprised of at least
three GSAC representatives and the GSAC Chairperson and/or the
Vice-Chairperson. The Chairperson of the PRC is appointed by the GSAC
Chairperson from the PRC membership. GSAC must approve (by majority
vote) the Chair's recommendation. Duties: To organize events that enrich the experiences of the graduate student community (i.e. Graduate and Non-Traditional Student Services Fair, CommUniverCity, Graduate Student Reception, Town Hall Meeting).
WEB PAGE COMMITTEE (WPC)
Purpose: To
maintain the GSAC web page. Meetings: Once a month or whenever
called by the WPC or GSAC Vice-Chair. Membership: The WPC is comprised of at
least three GSAC representatives and the
Vice-Chairperson. The Vice-Chair of GSAC chairs this committee. Duties: To ensure that information pertinent
to graduate students is posted regularly on the GSAC web site and oversee
any employee who might be retained to maintain the site.

COUNCILS & COMMITTEES
The Chairperson of the Graduate Student Advisory Committee may appoint any
GSAC member to sit on a University Council or Committee. GSAC
representatives with at least one semester's service may apply to the GSAC
Chairperson to sit on a University Council or Committee. Representatives may
sit on more than one University Council or Committee. The standing

DESCRIPTION OF UNIVERSITY COUNCILS AND COMMITTEES
Campus Planning and
Finance Council
(1 GSAC Representative) The Campus Planning and Finance Council functions as a body to
develop and recommend guidelines or review existing policies that provide a
framework which campus agencies may use as a benchmark in making decisions
related to campus planning and finance matters, review major plans for the
University's physical facilities, including on- and off-campus facilities,
transportation and infrastructure, and how they impact safety, security,
aesthetics, finances and the surrounding environment. The goal of such
reviews is to advise the administration of the views of the faculty and
determine how well those plans fit into the framework referred to in the
first item above, to review budget and financial issues of the
University and make recommendations to the administration as appropriate,
and conduct such special studies as the executive board of the Faculty
Senate may request, including ongoing charges.
Campus Activities Board

Meeting: Weekly. Purpose: This student agency is responsible for
selecting and funding events (i.e. Homecoming, Miller Movies, etc.) that
enhance the social life of the University community.
Faculty Senate
(GSAC
Chairperson or his/her designee--Non-Voting)
Meeting: Monthly. Purpose: The Faculty Senate shares
in the governance of WMU by formulating, reviewing and giving advice on
policies and other matters of concern to the University. Much of the basic
work of the Senate is related to the actions of its Councils and the
activities and recommendations of its Committees. The Senate is composed of
members elected by the faculty to represent the departments and the
University at large as well as members appointed by the University
President. It meets once a month to promote the common interests of the
University and give the faculty a share in the determination of
institutional policy.
Graduate Studies Council
(GSAC Chairperson and his/her designee)
Meeting: Monthly. Purpose: The Graduate Studies
Council reviews, develops, and recommends policy regarding graduate
education at Western Michigan University. Policy recommendations shall
include, but are not limited to, the admission of applicants to the Graduate
College and to graduate degree programs, development of graduate curricula
and approval of graduate programs, selection of graduate faculty, awards and
fellowships and graduate student personnel practices. Reviews shall include,
but are not limited to, existing programs, proposed new programs,
significant program changes and academic standards of graduate level
programs. The work of the council is accomplished through standing and ad
hoc committees that act on behalf of the council, within the framework of
its policies, and subject to review by the council.
The Council's Standing Committees are:
Agenda Committee: prepares
the agenda for meetings of the Graduate Studies Council.
Graduate Admissions and
Standards Committee: recommends policy for admissions and standards for
graduate programs.
Graduate Awards and
Fellowships Committee: reviews applications for financial assistance and
makes recommendations as to the recipients of Graduate College fellowships,
Dean's Research Assistants and grants from the Graduate Student Research
Fund.

Research Policies Council
(2 GSAC Representatives)
Meeting: Monthly. Purpose: This Council is
responsible for reviewing, developing, and recommending policies dealing
with the enhancement and implementation of research and creative activity in
the University.
Technology and Operations
Council
(1 GSAC Representative)
Meeting: Monthly. Purpose: This Council assists in
development and continuous revision, as appropriate to changing needs, of
the University's strategic plans for information technology (IT).
Western Student
Association
(Six
Graduate
College
Senators)
Meeting: Weekly. Purpose: The Western Student
Association is the student representative body concerned primarily with the
undergraduate population and its concerns. GSAC and the WSA often
collaborate on mutually beneficial events and projects.
