2008 University Dames Endowed Scholarship
Two graduate students—Ms. Ileana Dumitriu and Ms. Jerusa Carvajal—have been named 2008 recipients of the annual University Dames Endowed Scholarship. Ms. Dumitriu, a doctoral student in Physics, receives a $1,000.00 award and Ms. Carvajal, a master’s student in Spanish, receives $600.00.
The University Dames Endowed Scholarship was established in 1996 by the WMU Women’s Association to recognize students enrolled in any graduate degree program at Western Michigan University, with preference given to female candidates who have successfully completed 15 credit hours of graduate work. The award can be applied to tuition, fees, and books.
Ileana Dumitriu expects to graduate with the Ph.D. in Physics by April 2009. Her dissertation research topic is “Photodetachment of Atoms, Molecules and Small Clusters Using the Advanced Light Source at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.” Her research has resulted in several conference presentations as well as several articles in highly regarded journals.
Jerusa Carvajal holds two master’s degrees from Northern Baptist Theological Seminary as well as a B.A. in Spanish from the University of Massachusetts. Her exemplary work as a teaching assistant in Spanish has resulted in her being offered the position of mentor for all 2000-level Spanish sections for next academic year.
