Graduate Studies at WMU

Dr. Lewis Pyenson,
Dean of The Graduate College
Please allow me to welcome you to the Graduate College at Western Michigan University.
Graduate studies are in the midst of significant expansion at WMU. In the 2006-2007 academic year, the University conferred doctoral degrees on students in four new programs: The PhD in Spanish, the PhD in Interdisciplinary Health Studies, the Doctorate in Audiology, and the Interdisciplinary PhD in Evaluation. These exciting new programs span the breadth of the university, from the humanities to health science, education, and engineering. A great university is distinguished by its commitment in discovering new knowledge and new sensibilities across the broad spectrum of human experience. The programs are worthy complements to dozens of established doctoral programs at WMU.
Graduate studies involve advanced professional training in addition to apprenticeship in the art and the practice of original research. Our nationally distinguished master’s programs continue to experience strong growth. The reasons for this continuing confidence on the part of prospective students are found in WMU’s faculty, who have been able to achieve what few universities can claim—a firm place on the cutting edge of research without compromising attention to students as individuals.
In the present time of rapid change, we should remember that challenges give rise to opportunities. WMU has the firm desire and the resources to enable students to succeed in a wide range of endeavors. Do join us in our quest.
Yours sincerely,
Lewis Pyenson
Dean
