WMU Doctoral Program Process Flowcharts, Corresponding Narratives, and Time-to-Degree Charts

The following pages reflect the efforts of the Graduate Center for Research and Retention at Western Michigan University to place structure upon the doctoral education process. By flowing out the process for each of the disciplines within the Colleges and by including corresponding narratives, as well as charts depicting time-to-degree (TTD), we have created visual and linguistic representations of the doctoral process that permit students to traverse their respective programs of study with relative ease and certainty. Thus, students remain focused and on task in complying with program initiatives because the charts represent an accurate roadmap to completion. In addition, the charts dovetail into recruitment efforts and aid prospective students in program selection.
The method in developing each of the charts is to construct a prototype for the flow chart based upon information reflected in the Graduate Catalog and the respective program handbook. The department chair or his or her appointed representative, generally the program advisor or faculty member, engages in several conversations with the Graduate Center that permit for ongoing revision, development, and refinement of each chart. The final versions of the charts that appear on these pages, the corresponding narratives, as well as the TTD charts have received the tacit approval of department chairs.
We thank the deans, associate deans, department chairs, program advisors, and the faculty of each of the Colleges for their generous support of this project, which has now expanded to include master’s level programs, currently in progress. An integrated project to measure TTD in master’s programs is underway.
Questions or concerns regarding the charts should be directed to Dr. Marianne Di Pierro, Director, Graduate Center for Research and Retention: marianne.dipierro@wmich.edu or 269. 387. 8249.
