Department of Mathematics Colloquium - CDO pricing and the current subprime crisis
by Dr. Deming Zhuang, Citigroup Inc.
In financial markets, collateralized debt obligations (CDOs) are a type of asset-backed security and structured credit product. In structured finance, the word tranche refers to one of several related securitized bonds offered as part of the same deal. In this talk, I shall briefly review market standard methodologies to price synthetic CDO tranches and try to explain that how CDO pricing is related to the current subprime crisis. After introducing the essential terminologies and the structures of CDO tranches, I shall illustrate basic ideas of pricing synthetic CDO tranches and some related multi-name credit derivatives. The CDO market blooming in the past few years and the current situation are discussed.
