Abstract:
This study used data from 4,808 African American youth from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health to explore the relationship between family structure, attachment and juvenile delinquency. Structural equation modeling was used. The study examines the historical development of African American family structures and discusses how those structures have acted as protective factors in reducing delinquency. The study indicated that regardless of family structure when a youth is attached to someone in the household structure delinquency will be reduced.
