Candidate: Jason Skipper Degree of: Doctor of Philosophy Committee: Dr.Stuart Dybek, Chair Date: Thursday, April 28, 2005 12:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m. Abstract: Hustle chronicles the life of a young man growing up in Texas, focusing on the relationships between he and his ex-con artist grandfather and his alcoholic, philandering father. The narrator wants to be a musician while his grandfather and father want him to run the family business of selling shrimp from a van on the side of the road. When the grandfather dies of emphysema, the father makes a series of decisions that ultimately dismantle their already rickety lives. Later, when the father falls ill with cancer and becomes entirely dependent on the son to run the business, the young man has to decide whether to support the father who won’t help himself or follow his own path and create an identity separate from that of his father and grandfather.
