Abstract: My dissertation proposal is testing a modified version of social disorganization theory, as described by Todd Clear and Dina Rose. I will be studying community social disorganization, crime rates, and the extraction of individuals out of the community (as a result of criminal convictions). I will be examining the effects of formal social controls on neighborhoods or census tracts, as well as on other social variables, including public assistance rates, unemployment rates, general crime rate, and media income.
