Abstract: Using Herbert Scott's poem "The Beekeeper's Wife" as a prologue, and my own experience as the wife of a beekeeper, I have written a collection of poems about surrealistic moments in the natural world, as well as the large and small semi-biographical events of a woman's life. The collection includes poems ostensibly about the beekeeper's family, life in small town America, and observations about the life and art of the naturalist and painter Maria Sibylla Merian, b.1647-d. 1717. In the tradition of Muriel Rukeyser, Ann Sexton, Elizabeth Bishop and Marianne Moore, all of whom I consider to be my fore-mothers in poetry, these works can be understood to be somewhat political as well as, I hope, artful.
