Abstract:
The Principle of Flickering is a collection of thirty lyric poems that engage with ways we construct and deconstruct frames of meaning. The collection takes its title from a painting by Kasimir Malevich, for whom “the principle of flickering" related to a theory of constant motion. Reflecting this title, the poems in The Principle of Flickering show frames of meaning as ever shifting entities. While the poems encounter a variety of subject matter, they frequently return to themes of artistic endeavor, familial relationships, and interaction with the natural world as they explore encounters with structures of meaning more ephemeral than static.
