Google Sites at WMU Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I access Google Sites at WMU? Go to http://google.wmich.edu and login with your Bronco NetID and password. Click the apps launcher icon and select Sites.
  • What is the difference between Classic and New Google Sites? The new interface mimics the "modern" style of website design and has a drag and drop interface. There are limited options for design. The classic style has more options, page types and formats.
  • What are site templates? They define your site layout and standard site navigation. There are many available and your first step is to select a site template. Once you choose a site template, it cannot be switched with another one so choose wisely.
  • Can I create my own template? Yes, by choosing a Blank Template.
  • Can attributes of the template be changed? Yes, you can change items such as fonts, colors, headers and footers, and add images.
  • What are page templates? Within a page you can layout the content area using several formats. The format can be saved and applied to new pages.
  • Can I password protect pages on Google Sites? Not exactly. You can share your site with others so that people can view your site, people can edit your site or your site is open to the public or a group of users. If you want people to see your site without an invitation, make it public. Otherwise make it private.
  • Can I restrict my site to WMU people only? Yes, your site can be fully public (searchable), public only if you provide people with the link, or accessible only by the WMU community.
  • Can I create forms? Yes, Google Forms is a tool you can use to create a form with a variety of field types. Form responses can be stored in a Google Worksheet on your Google Drive.
  • Can I migrate my homepages.wmich.edu site to Google Sites? There is no direct migration tool. You can create your Google Site and then browse to your homepages site and copy and paste the pages into the Google Site. More information.
  • Can I re-create my current site on homepages in Google Sites? That depends on the complexity of your current site. Since Google Sites are template based, you will need to work within the constraints of the template you choose. Some features that are currently on your website may not transfer to Google Sites, but in most cases, you have more options with Google Sites than with homepages.
  • What are the options available in Google Sites? There are special page types such as webpages, announcements, file cabinet, and list. Forms are much easier to implement and you can provide feedback from forms. You can easily embed YouTube videos, Google Maps, Google Calendars, and files on your Google Drive.
  • Does Google Sites support mobile devices? Yes, your pages will automatically adjust to mobile devices if you enable the Mobile option (from Manage Sites).
  • Can I have more than one Google Site? Yes, with Google Sites you can have more than one site, each having its own URL.
  • Will I be able to keep my homepages URL? This has not yet been determined but we are looking into whether or not we can do redirects.
