Study Abroad

Western Michigan University offers a wide range of study abroad opportunities.

WMU-sponsored study abroad programs

The College of Arts and Sciences offers a $1,000 International Study Scholarship with deadlines on Feb. 15 and Oct. 15 each year. Feel free to meet with the academic advisor if you would like your application reviewed prior to submitting it.

Students may choose to participate in a faculty-led academic experience for a few weeks, or they may elect to study for a semester or a full academic year as an exchange student at one of a dozen universities.

Either way, the language and cultural immersion experience is life changing! Advisors will work with you to assure that coursework abroad counts toward your degree. There are also many study abroad scholarships available around campus.

Study abroad experiences are a good way to learn about other cultures, and also learn more about ourselves.

International Development and Community Service in Peru

Are you interested in participating in a community service project to deepen your understanding of international development? In this course, students work with a non-governmental organization (NGO) in the colonial city of Urubamba, Peru and explore the issues of health care, education, small-business financing, and the role of women in the community.  Students are housed with local families, and while Spanish is not required, those with some basic Spanish skills will get a language immersion experience.  Students interested in health care, engineering, Spanish, business, education, social work, and other majors are welcome to apply.

Professor Hastings is leading this course; please go to the WMU Study Abroad website or contact her directly for more information.

Deadline: The application deadline for this program is January 31, 2025.
Scholarship: Students applying for this program may be eligible for the Haenicke Institute for Global Education Study Abroad Scholarship.

The university offers over 200 courses in several disciplines many of which can count toward your global and international studies program. Be sure to discuss your course selection with your advisor once the course catalog Bogazici becomes available. The program runs from mid June to mid August of 2015 and has a rolling admission process. Visit the WMU Study Abroad website, check out the program's Facebook page, or contact Dr. Jim Butterfield.
