Student Organizations

The Department of Geosciences at Western Michigan University is committed to the all-round development of our students. Participation in organizations is an excellent way for you to receive training for the workforce after you graduate.  We take great pride in participating in this training.

You are encouraged to actively participate in events related to your study and to implement your knowledge outside of the classrooms. This involvement helps to develop:

Geology club

The Western Michigan University Geology Club, sponsored by the department:

  • Stimulates an active interest in geology and earth science through sharing of new ideas, discussions and presentations.
  • Increases an awareness about geoscience through different media.
  • Fosters new experiences in geosciences through geology field trips and community events.

WMU student chapter of American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG)

The WMU chapter of American Institute of Professional Geologists was chartered in 2015. It organizes social and educational events to promote geology as a profession.  AIPG emphasizes competence, integrity and ethics.

WMU student chapter of American Association of Petroleum Geologists

The WMU chapter of American Association of Petroleum Geologists was reestablished in 2014. It organizes social and educational events to promote careers in the oil and gas industries as well as academia.

WMU student chapter of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG)

The Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) Student Chapter at Western Michigan University prepares geoscience students in the field of exploration geophysics. It establishes the connection between students life and the industry career. The society helps students expand their knowledge of geosciences, be involved in hands-on research along with increasing leadership and cooperation through teamwork and sharing of ideas. The chapter members are graduate and undergraduate students interested in geophysics and petroleum exploration at Geosciences Department.
