Department of Geography

Community Development & Planning Concentration

This area of concentration prepares students for careers as urban & regional planners, land use planners, transportation planners, county planners, zoning administrators, and other planning related careers in local and regional governments. This concentration also prepares students for careers in the private sector, where planning consultant firms carry out substantial work on contract for public agencies. In these latter agencies, students may bring specialized skills to planning activities because of the specialization of the firm.

In addition to required core courses, the program exposes students to courses from cognate fields of planning. It requires a minimum of 37 credit hours. These include 16 credits of geography graduate program, 15 credits of required community development and planning courses, 6 credits of planning thesis/studio/practicum, and 6 credits electives.

Individualized Planned Area of Concentration
Students may also be able to plan their own program based on their career goals. However, since this will be a degree under geography, students must fulfill the required geography core areas and must also follow the graduate college rules.

Courses for All Concentrations
Several flexible courses may be used in any concentration area, when relevant to your program of study. These are individualized independent study courses or professional internships.
