This
spring a team of WMU geography and engineering students
modeled Western’s campus in 3-D to
be put on Google Earth. The project started when team leader
Jon Rumohr an engineering senior discovered that Google
was holding a nationwide competition to model college campuses
in 3-D. Shortly after the idea of modeling the campus was
mentioned to supervisors at the WMU Physical Plant the possibilities
were realized and a team was formed.
The team consisted
of mechanical engineering senior Jon Rumohr, geography/GIS
senior Gus Martinka,
graduate geography student Cari Delong,
geography/GIS graduate student Jay Eichstaedt,
mechanical engineering junior Neal Sheldon, mechanical
engineering senior Gregory Adamczyk and geography
senior Josh Groeneveld.
The team placed
in the top 30 among 365 universities that entered
Google’s competition and the project results are
being employed in a variety of uses on campus including
virtual campus tours via the Admissions webpage, which
can be seen at www.wmich.edu/admissions/virtual-tour/
