Graduate admission

Applicants possessing a bachelor's degree with a major or minor in geography or a related academic discipline such as social science, biological, engineering, health, business or physical science majors may apply for admission to the School of Environment, Geography, and Sustainability.

Western Michigan University has an online graduate application system that allows all students, domestic and international, to submit required information into one system. General application information for the University, as well as specific requirements for individual programs, are captured into this system.

Applicants to the School of Environment, Geography, and Sustainability are asked to include some program-specific information for the Master of Science in geography. Applicants are encouraged to bookmark this information for quick reference while working through the graduate application process. You are not required to take the GRE test to apply for the MS in Geography program.

Deadlines and Other Information

  • Graduate admission to the School of Environment, Geography, and Sustainability is rolling. However, to be considered for a Departmental assistantship, applicants must apply to the program by Feb. 15 (all students that apply for the MS program by this date are automatically considered for an assistantship unless the applicant opts out of consideration--the department does not fund students enrolled in certificate programs).
  • Additional information about assistantships, including other funding sources, can be reviewed on The Graduate College website.
  • Please contact our Graduate Advisor with any questions you have about the graduate application process, funding, etc.
