First-Year Seminar Outdoor Learning Experience

Pack your bags!!! Begin your college experience with the First-Year Seminar Outdoor Learning Experience (OLE). The beginning of the first year of college is a good opportunity for first-year students to reflect on what they want to accomplish during their college experience, identify and assess their strengths and weaknesses and most importantly formulate personal and academic goals.

The First-Year Seminar invites you to participate in this unique experience designed to challenge you and prepare you for the collegiate experience through experiential education. OLE is a weekend wilderness-based program that takes place at Southwest Michigan’s leading experiential learning centers called The Adventure Centre.

Adventure Centre has over 30 years of experience and is a leader in facilitating low ropes, high ropes, climbing tower activities and team building experiences for individuals and groups. The programs offered combine industry-leading challenge-course programming, adventure and experiential education by highly trained experienced and professional facilitators. All of the OLE activities will take place outdoors at the 214 acre wilderness site and are designed to address the learning objectives of First-Year Seminar.

The objectives of OLE is to provide programming that will assist students in:

  • valuing diversity
  • building confidence
  • understanding learning and leadership styles
  • developing problem-solving skills
  • enhancing communication
  • understanding influence and responding effectively to conflict.

NOTE: There is a cost associated with OLE and space is limited to the first 50 students who sign up. OLE takes place on a weekend in October during the fall semester. Additional details will be shared during New Student Orientation.
