Parent and Family Orientation

Summer Orientation 2017

We strongly encourage parents and families to attend orientation at Western Michigan University with your student. Our two-day program will have you attending presentations with your student along with a separate Parent and Family Orientation programming track. We will share valuable resources to assist with your student’s transition into and throughout their time at WMU.

Registration and costs

There is no separate registration process for parents and families. If you would like to attend, have your student indicate your name in the parent and family section as he or she registers. Your student’s orientation fee—which is billed directly to their account with fall tuition—covers all programming expenses and meals for up to two family members.

Parents and families will attend lunch, a general session and academic sessions with their student. The parent and family track includes a workshop on effective student support from The Office of Family Engagement, and a presentation from Residence Life and Dining Services. We also host a mixer offering you intimate time to talk with our faculty, staff and administrators. On day two, parents and families attend a dynamic theatrical performance—“The Bronco Way”—that highlights common themes experienced by first-year students and showcases the talents of our WMU Theatre students. At the conclusion of the show our Orientation Student Leaders will answer all of your questions in an open panel.

Accommodations and meals

Your student will stay with us on campus in the Valley 2 residence halls. There are many hotels nearby to accommodate our parents and families. Many will offer a discount with the MyWMU concierge card. In the morning of day one, you are invited to join our staff for a full hot lunch in the Valley I residence halls. We also provide mid-afternoon hors d'oeuvres at the parent and family mixer. On day two, we will provide a continental breakfast for you at the Gilmore Theater Complex.
