WMU Dance Major Receives Grant, Studies in Panama

The perfect blend of earning a BFA in Dance from Western, a passion for nonprofit service, and a local Arts Council grant created a dream opportunity for Sarah Mills.  She plans to start a chapter of Movement Exchange on the Campus of Western Michigan University, which is a program for at-risk children to learn dance.                                                                                                                         


Bronco Marching Band and Color Guard Prepare all Summer

Fox 17  News caught up with the Bronco Marching Band and the color guard earlier this summer and found that it is practice as usual all summer long to prepare for those stunning half-time shows. Hip and trendy music is on the docket for this football season!


Recent Alum from the School of Music Heads to Spain to Compete this Month

Western Michigan University graduate Evan Clifton has been named a finalist in an elite international trombone competition and is headed to Spain tocompete in the Donald Yaxley Bass Trombone Competition. He will compete for a 2,000 euro gift certificate toward a new trombone at the 2015 International Trombone Festival.  Clifton was accepted to Northwestern University's trombone graduate program on a generous scholarship and will head to Chicago to study this fall.


College of Fine Arts Presents Awards to Staff and Faculty

The WMU College of Fine Arts has awarded seven faculty and staff members for excellence in their field. A nominating committee of their peers chose from the many talented and dedicated people.

They are, (top left to right) Brian Wilson, professor of music and director of the music therapy program for 40 years of service and retirement; outstanding staff to Don Desmett, founding director of exhibitions at the Richmond Center for Visual Arts; and excellence in teaching part time was Paul Flickinger, a part-time instructor of ceramics, art appreciation, and foundation art at the Gwen Frostic School of Art.

Also included (second row, left to right) are Emily Duguay, the director of arts management for WMU's Department of Theatre for outstanding staff; excellence in creative research went to Dr. Christopher Biggs, assistant professor of digital composition at the WMU School of Music; the excellence in teaching award was for Sharon Garber, professor of dance at the WMU Department of Dance.

The Roehrick Distinguished Professor Award went to Cat Crotchett, professor of art, painting, and art appreciation at the Gwen Frostic School of Art.
