Scholarships
WMU Scholarships
Each year, Finance and Commercial Law majors and minors are invited to apply for various scholarships available to all business students through the Office of Student Development. In addition, there are a number of scholarships that are available solely for FCL students.
The qualifications and conditions associated with scholarships follow:
Charles C. and Lynn Zhang and Associates Scholarships
- Two scholarship awards.
- Undergraduate BBA with Finance or Personal Financial Planning major.
- Awarded to a junior and senior-level student with the highest cumulative GPA and by the recommendation of the Chair.
- Academic-based award.
- Maintain a minimum course load of 12 credit hours.
- Award Amount: $1000 for each awardee at the end of Spring semester.
Davette Susan Jones Endowed Finance Scholarship
- Full-time Undergraduate BBA majoring in Finance.
- Preference given to members of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
- Participation in the University's Study Abroad Program considered.
- Minimum 2.5 GPA.
- One-time non-renewable scholarship award.
- Award amount is $500.
James Perry Scholarship
- Full-time BBA or MBA finance major with minimum 3.00 GPA for consideration.
- Preference given to transfer student from Henry Ford Community College and secondly from any other community college.
- Preference given to member of Alpha Kappa Psi fraternity.
- One-time non-renewable scholarship award.
- Award amount is $1,000.
Liehr Family Scholarship for Personal Financial Planning
- Full-time BBA Personal Financial Planning major, or expressing a strong interest in the program.
- Preference shall be given to any student from the state of Illinois, and secondarily to any student from Kalamazoo County.
- One-time non-renewable scholarship award.
- Award amount is $500.
Sanford Financial Services Scholarship for Financial Planning
- Minimum GPA 3.00 for consideration.
- Full-time junior or senior from the state of Michigan.
- Undergraduate BBA majoring in Personal Financial Planning.
- Preference given to students planning to pursue careers as a Certified Financial Planner.
- Need based award.
- Two renewable scholarship awards at $1,000 each.
State Farm Scholarship in Finance
Application
- Three scholarship awards
- Undergraduate BBA student with Finance or Personal Financial Planning major.
- Preference to students planning to pursue careers in insurance or financial services.
- Awarded on basis of scholarship and professional activities/accomplishments.
- Not a need-based award.
- Award amount $2,000 is for junior year, distributed equally between Fall and Spring semesters (renewable one-time for a total of two years).
Scholarships Funded by Outside Organizations
Arthur N. Caple Foundation
- Scholarship awards offered to junior, senior and graduate students who demonstrate academic excellence and an understanding of the issues facing public sector retirement plans.
- $1,000 to be used toward educational expenses in the 2011-2012 school year.
- Registration, travel and hotel accomodations for the NAGDCA Annual meeting (valued at over $1,000).
- Coverage of expenses to enroll in the Certified Retirement Counselor (CRC) certification, including program materials and exam.
- Deadline is April 18, 2011.

Charted Financial Analyst (CFA) Exam
Application
The CFA Institute is offering student scholarships for the December 2012 CFA exam. The scholarship waives the enrollment fee and substantially discounts the registration fee for the exam , which includes the study materials.
Scholarship Qualifications:
- Full-time WMU student in final undergraduate year, scheduled to receive a bachelor’s degree.
- Full-time or part-time graduate student.
- Valid international travel passport.
How to apply:
- Applications are available in the office of the Department of Finance and Commercial Law.
- Return completed form to Dr. Devrim Yaman (Schneider Hall/Office #3122) by July 2, 2012.
- Applicants will be interviewed by the sponsoring professors of the FCL Department.
- Once the scholarship recipients have been notified, the CFA Institute will contact them with the instructions on how to register for the exam.

Greenleaf Trust
- For WMU students planning to major in Finance or Personal Financial Planning.
- Preference given to students in under-represented ethnic groups.
- Eight scholarships are awarded.
- Award amount $10,000, distributed equally between Fall and Spring semesters (renewable three times for a total of four years).

Derek Hughes/NAPSLO Educational Foundation Scholarships
- Major must be related to a career in insurance.
- Undergraduate or graduate degree program in Actuarial Science, Business, Economics, Finance, Insurance, Management, Risk Management or Statistics.
- Minimum GPA of 3.0.
- Need-based award.

- Approximately ten $5,000 scholarships.
George Harding Fund Charitable Trust Scholarship by the Michigan Bankers Association
Information and application
- Awarded to Michigan resident who is a full-time undergraduate or graduate student.
- Degree program must be finance-related, business administration, economics, etc.
- Minimum GPA of 3.0.
- Available to juniors and seniors.
- Campus activities and evidence of leadership qualities are considered.
- Award amount is $1,000.
Insurance Scholarship Foundation of America
- One application for consideration in three different awards.
- Spring and fall award periods.
- Scholarships to junior or senior students majoring or minoring in insurance, risk management or actuarial science.
- Candidate must be completing or have completed the second year of college.
- Candidate will have successfully completed two insurance, risk management, or actuarial science courses having a minimum of three credit hours each.
- Minimum GPA of 3.0.
- Scholarship may range from $500 to $5,000.

Spencer Educational Foundation, Inc.
- Awards a variety of Named and Memorial Scholarships to full-time undergraduate students.
- One full-time application to be considered for all awards.
- Field of study - Normally a risk management discipline within a business curriculum.
- Minimum GPA 3.0 or higher.
- Scholarships awarded on the basis of merit.
