Michigan Programs

Michigan Competetive Scholarsip (AS)

Eligibility Criteria

  • Qualifying ACT score from High School testing
  • Graduate from Michigan high school (within last ten years)
  • Michigan Resident (per FAFSA information and State guidelines)
  • Tuition only
  • Student must notify State of Michigan attending WMU (if not first school choice on FAFSA).
  • Funds may not be available if completing the FAFSA after Michigan's priority deadline of March 1 of the upcoming aid year for both high school seniors and college students
  • Undergraduate students, first bachelor degree, enrolled at least half time
  • Award eligibility based upon EFC, enrollment and other resources
  • Award amount canceled if enrolled less than half time
  • Award may be adjusted or canceled if EFC changes or student receives additional resources (other than the Michigan Merit Award)
  • Maximum eligibility of ten semesters; requires minimum 2.00 cumulative GPA and meets school's Satisfactory Academic Progress Standards

Michigan Education Trust (MET)

Eligibility Criteria

  • MET contract purchased from the State of Michigan
  • Student must notify State of Michigan attending WMU.
  • Added to the student’s “financial aid award file” on a semester-by-semester basis (after receiving eligibility information from MET)
  • Amount of award considered as a “resource” and may reduce your eligibility for other financial aid programs
  • Can be used for study abroad (up to amount of tuition and fees for 12 credit hours at WMU)
  • MET notifies WMU on a semester-by-semester basis of eligible students and maximum number of credit hours remaining for each student

Cost of tuition (up to a maximum number of hours as designated by MET); enrollment and student assessment fees, orientation fee Room, board, books, non-mandatory fees and other expenses are NOT covered by MET

Michigan Promise Scholarship (formerly Michigan Merit Award)

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be a Michigan resident
  • Take the State Assessment Test; the MEAP for students graduating in 2007 and the Michigan Merit Exam (MME) for the Class of 2008 and beyond
  • Enroll at an approved postsecondary institution in Michigan or a military service academy within two years of graduating from high school
  • Achieve a cumulative college grade point average of 2.5
  • Be a high school graduate or have passed the GED
  • Must certify eligibility for the scholarship

Michigan Indian Tuition Waiver (MITW)

Eligibility Criteria

  • One-quarter degree Indian blood quantum
  • Michigan Resident for at least one year prior to the start of the academic year for which you are applying (i.e., since July 1 of prior year).
  • You must meet and maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress per financial aid guidelines to renew your scholarship for future years
  • You must be enrolled in a degree granting or certificate program, either undergraduate or graduate.
  • Guest students are not eligible
  • Consortium students are eligible as long as WMU is your home institution.

Police Officer’s and Fire Fighter’s Survivor Tuition Act

Eligibility Criteria

This program provides a waiver of tuition at public community colleges and state universities for  the surviving spouse and children (under age 21) of Michigan police and fire fighters killed in the line of duty.

Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria

The Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship is a federally funded program established to promote student excellence and achievement and to recognize exceptionally able students who show promise of continued excellence.  To be eligible, a scholarship recipient must graduate from a public or private secondary school or have the equivalent of a certificate of graduation and must be admitted for enrollment at an institution of higher education.  The award is for the first year of study at any college or university in the U.S.  A student must file with the institution that he/she intends to submit a Statement of Registration Status certifying that he/she is registered with Selective Service or that he/she is not required to be registered.

Tuition Incentive Program (TIP)

Eligibility Criteria

The TIP Program at WMU is for students who were receiving TIP at a Michigan Community College and are transferring to WMU with 56 transfer credits OR have earned 56 credits hours at WMU. A “TIP Letter of Credit” must be given to Student Financial Aid as proof of eligibility.

Awards

Students may receive up to $500 per semester for four semesters.

Vocational Rehabilitation

Eligibility Criteria

Educational benefits are available based on financial need for students with physical or mental impairments resulting in a substantial impediment to employment.
