Grant for Study Abroad
Eligibility
Criteria
- Students
must be participating in a language based study abroad program
for a semester or academic year
- Students
must complete the FAFSA, if wishing to be considered for the need-based
awards. For merit awards only, students do not need to complete
a FAFSA, but they must submit a signed Financial Information Release
as part of their application.
- Preference
given to students participating in a WMU study abroad program
- U.S.
Citizenship is required if applying for financial need-based awards.
International students may apply only if the native language of
the country in which they plan to study is not their own, and
they will be considered on the basis of merit.
- Current
full-time undergraduate or graduate enrollment at WMU (If undergraduate,
at least sophomore status). Transfer students must complete one
semester of full-time coursework at WMU prior to application.
- WMU
undergraduate overall minimum 2.5 GPA or a minimum 3.0 GPA last
two semesters prior to the semester abroad.
- Graduate
students: 3.5 GPA overall
- Courses
in relevant foreign language and area studies courses directly
related to country or region of study (for more detailed information
on this issue, contact the Office of Study Abroad).

may apply for both financial need and merit based awards. The
grant will attempt to make up as much of the difference between
the cost of attending WMU and the cost of the study abroad program,
given evaluation guidelines. Application deadlines are in March
and November for studying abroad the following semester.

Cultures Grant for Study Abroad

Criteria
- Students
may not receive both a Presidents Grant for Study Abroad
and an Understudied Cultures Grant
- U.S.
Citizenship
- Completion
of the FAFSA form for the current year. This is a need based
award only.
- Undergraduate
who must have completed at least one year of university studies
with a minimum 3.0 GPA overall at WMU
- Students
are expected to devote at least half of their course work to area
studies in the host country in any discipline (e.g., African Studies)
- Preference
given to participants in WMU study abroad program
