Spanish Scholarships

Ruth Y. Kirby Awards for Travel and Study Abroad

 

Eligibility Criteria

• Must be currently enrolled in WMU as an undergraduate student
• Must have declared major in Spanish
• Must have completed at WMU a 300-level course in Spanish
• Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
• Must have a minimum 3.25 GPA  in Spanish
• Must be enrolled in a Study Abroad program in a Spanish speaking country
• Must submit a 300-500 word essay detailing the applicant’s interests and goals as they relate to the study and/or use of Spanish

Ruth Y. Kirby Scholarship Awards

Eligibility Criteria

• Must be currently enrolled WMU undergraduate student with declared major in Spanish
• Must have completed one 300-level SPAN course at WMU prior to the semester of application and must complete at least two additional 300-level SPAN courses by the end of the semester of application
• Must have minimum 3.00 GPA overall and 3.25 GPA in Spanish
• Must complete at least one 500-level SPAN course after receiving award

Sue C. Mardis Foreign Language Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria

• Must be female student currently enrolled full-time at WMU.
• Minority candidates are encouraged to apply.
• Must have a declared Spanish major or be a graduate student in Spanish
• Must have completed at WMU one 300-level SPAN course prior to the semester of application and must complete at least one more 300-level SPAN course by the end of the semester of application
• Must have minimum 3.0 GPA overall
• Must enroll in departmentally-approved study abroad program to begin within one year of award and must be for at least one full semester

Awards

• Application and selection process occur during fall semester
• One annual award of $2500

The President’s Award for Study Abroad in Spanish

Eligibility Criteria

• Must be currently enrolled WMU undergraduate student with declared major in Spanish
• Must have completed at WMU at least one 300-level SPAN course prior to the semester of application and must complete at least one more 300-level SPAN course at WMU by the end of the semester of application
• Must have a minimum overall GPA of 3.00 and a minimum GPA of 3.75 in Spanish major
• Must enroll in a departmentally-approved study abroad program* whose credits are transferable to WMU
• *applicable to programs with duration of one-semester or longer

Awards

In Spanish, one award of $2500, given in fall semester of even-numbered year

The President’s Scholarships for Study Abroad in Spanish

Eligibility Criteria

• Must be currently enrolled WMU undergraduate student with declared major in Spanish
• Must have completed at WMU at least one 300-level Spanish course prior to the semester of application and must complete at least one more 300-level Spanish course at WMU by the end of the semester of application
• Must have a minimum overall GPA of 3.00 and a minimum GPA of 3.50 in Spanish major
• Must enroll in a departmentally-approved study abroad program* whose credits are transferable to WMU

*applicable to programs with duration of one-semester or longer

Awards

• Fall and spring semester application and selection process.
• Total of six annual scholarships of $2000 each

Spanish Department Travel/Study Abroad Awards

Eligibility Criteria

• Must be currently enrolled WMU undergraduate student with declared major in Spanish
• Must have completed a minimum of two SPAN courses (at least one of which must be a 300-level or higher) at WMU by the end of the semester of application
• Must have a minimum overall GPA of 3.25 and a minimum GPA of 3.50 in Spanish major
• Must enroll in departmentally-approved study abroad program* whose credits are transferable to WMU

*applicable to summer, one-semester or one-year approved programs
